Instructions

    • 1

If you're uncertain, make sure the hotel or motel you're staying at is air conditioned, particularly on a budget vacation or at a Bed and breakfast or hostel. Not much is worse than arriving at your lodging in 95-degree heat and finding out there's no AC.

    • 2

Take plenty of beverages along, and plan ahead by putting them in the freezer for an hour before your journey. Keep an eye on any cans, though, which can explode in your freezer if left long enough.

    • 3

Drink lots of water and other healthy beverages to avoid dehydration. Sodas and super-sweet energy drinks can taste great when you're overheated, but won't help you feel better in the long run.

    • 4

Wear light, loose airy clothing. Blue jeans might seem like good summertime wear, but won't keep you cool in severe heat. Light colors will reflect the sun rather than soaking it in, so black is worst of all on a hot day.

    • 5

If you're going for a hike or enjoying other outdoor activities, there are numerous special water packs available that will fit easily around your waist that won't hinder you.

    • 6

Even if you're not a big hat-wearer, consider a cap on a hot day to provide some constant shade for your face. And try to wear open shoes like sandals or go barefoot whenever possible.

    • 7

Try to remain cool and calm even when travel hassles like freeway traffic arise. Getting worked up over things you can't control will only make you perspire even more and won't help at all either.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget to apply sunblock on a hot day, even when direct sunlight doesn't seem overbearing.

I get the idea of wearing a white shirt. Is a loose longsleeved white shirt better than white short sleeves? When socially appropriate, is no shirt at all better than either one of the above?
