Fried rice is a hearty dish that can supplement another main dish or serve as a meal in its own right. Traditionally, fried rice can be time consuming and many people avoid making it because the idea of frying rice is somewhat intimidating to novice chefs. - 1 box instant rice
- 1 egg
- Soy sauce
- 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
- 1/2 stick of butter
- 1 can water chestnuts,drained
- 1 can bamboo shoots, drained
- Skillet with a lid

Melt 1/4 of the stick of butter in the skillet. Set the heat on medium-high. When the butter is melted but not yet hissing or bubbling, move on to the next step.

Add four dashes of soy sauce. Continue stirring as you add the sauce. The rice will turn light brown.

Crack the egg into the skillet. As you stir, break up the yolk. The egg will cook almost immediately and mix in with the rice.

Turn down the heat under the skillet. Use medium heat from this point forward.

Add the vegetables. As you add the vegetables, continue to stir. If you wish, add more butter and soy sauce at this time.

Some cooks like to add packets of Asian seasonings to their fried rice. If you do so, start with half a packet as these spices can be very strong.
