  • 1 egg
  • Soy sauce
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1/2 stick of butter
  • 1 can water chestnuts,drained

      Instant rice has already been cooked and just needs to be rehydrated.

      Prepare the instant rice according to the directions on the box. Generally this will require you to add a cup of water to the rice and microwave it for five minutes. However, be sure to read the instructions as brands vary slightly.

      Melt 1/4 of the stick of butter in the skillet. Set the heat on medium-high. When the butter is melted but not yet hissing or bubbling, move on to the next step.

      Fried rice must be stirred at all times. For stickier rice, add more butter and extend the cooking time slightly.

      Spread the cooked instant rice across the bottom of the skillet. You will need to stir constantly to avoid scorching the rice.

      Add four dashes of soy sauce. Continue stirring as you add the sauce. The rice will turn light brown.

      Crack the egg into the skillet. As you stir, break up the yolk. The egg will cook almost immediately and mix in with the rice.

      Add the vegetables. As you add the vegetables, continue to stir. If you wish, add more butter and soy sauce at this time.

      Cover the skillet. Let the rice and vegetables cook for five more minutes and then you are ready to eat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some cooks like to add packets of Asian seasonings to their fried rice. If you do so, start with half a packet as these spices can be very strong.
