Derby pie is quite easily one of the richest, most decadent desserts you can make. Served traditionally during Kentucky Derby days, derby pie is a treat any time of the year, and makes a great dessert for holiday parties and potluck dinners. In this article, we will discuss how to make derby pie.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 stick of butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup of semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup of chopped pecans
  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie shell
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • Spatula

    How to Make Derby Pie

  1. Step 1

    Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Step 2
    The batter will have a slightly grainy texture from the sugar.

    Beat the eggs, butter and sugar in the large mixing bowl. They should make a stiff, creamy batter.

  3. Step 3

    Add the flour. Be careful not to run the mixer on too high a speed or the flour will fly everywhere.

  4. Step 4

    Add the vanilla, chocolate chips and pecans. Decrease the mixer speed again to avoid chopping up the chocolate chips.

  5. Step 5

    Pour the batter into the pie crust. Use the spatula to make sure you get all of the batter out of the bowl and to smooth the top of the pie.

    Bake for 30 minutes. When it is done, the top of the pie will be crusty and light brown while the inside is still gooey.
