Some kids just don't seem to be able to balance on a bike. Training wheels and mom or dad running along side just yields falls, tears and frustration. Use this method when all else fails. It works and in a few days your child will be riding like an expert.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
A bicycle is a great way to have fun. Exercise, freedom and a sense of adventure are there as you venture out on your two wheels to the world around the block or around the town. Most people learn to ride by first using training wheels which are slowly adjusted so that the child must balance more and more. Eventually mom and dad decide it's time for the training wheel to go. Sometimes the kids are naturals, others have some difficulty but do learn. But there are others who can't seem to get the hang of it. When that happens tears, anger or frustration often results. But there is a simple solution and that is what this article is about.
Step2
The first step to learn to ride without training wheels is to remove them completely. Then set the bikes seat as low as possible. The child should be able to sit on the seat with there feet on the ground with a bend in their knees.
Step3
The best place to practice is your yard or any grassy flat surface. Tell the child to sit on the seat and push themselves with their feet like they are riding a scooter. Encourage them to pick their feet up off the ground to coast. If they start to fall they can put their feet on the round.
Step4
Let them play with their scooter-bike. If your yard has a slight downgrade, encourage them to coast downhill. As they gain confidence, encourage them to rest their feet on the peddles.
Step5
After two or three days, you will find that the child is balancing on his scooter-bike quite easily. Some kids may take a week or longer to learn, but most will learn within a week to balance. The more time they play/ride, the sooner they learn.
Step6
Observe the child and when in your judgment they are ready, encourage then to peddle and not to just coast. Keep them on the grass for a while. Soon they will be ready to join you for a ride around the block.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a small enough bike so that the child can easily put their feet on the ground.
  • A properly fitting helmet is a must as is a safe place to practice. Knee and elbows pads add to the security of the child. In the beginning especially supervise their efforts.
