How to Make Brown Sugar Topping

Bored with plain ice cream? Want something other than fudge, strawberry or caramel topping? Love anything with brown sugar in it? Here is a very easy recipe for an alternative to all those boring run-of-the-mill toppings. With this brown sugar topping your desserts will never be the same. In fact, to test out the popularity of this topping, you should hold an ice cream sundae party (either for your friends or kids would love this) and make the brown sugar topping. Summer is the perfect time for an ice cream party even thought people love ice cream all year round. Everyone will ask what it is that tastes so good, and it will be your secret topping! What’s nice about this topping is how quick it is to make. The topping tastes best right after being cooked so be sure to make it right before guests arrive.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 tbsp. butter (or margarine if you want a healthier option)
  • 3 tsp. brown sugar
  • Skillet
  • Wooden spoon

Start Cooking

  • Place three tablespoons of butter into the skillet. Turn stove on to low heat.

  • Once butter has fully melted, add three teaspoons of brown sugar (more if desired).

  • Stir vigorously around in skillet until thoroughly mixed. Turn off stove.

  • Carefully pour mixture into a bowl or directly onto ice cream, yogurt, apples, or cake.

  • If you want to make more topping, keep to this ratio: for every tablespoon of butter, add a teaspoon of brown sugar. Add more toppings, such as sprinkles or crumbled Oreo cookies, as desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Like any other topping, this one is no different and is very sticky so be sure to look where you are pouring it. Also, after pouring the topping out, immediately fill the skillet with hot water. If you have time, it’s best to clean the skillet immediately so that the mixture does not harden or stick to the skillet. However, if you do not have time, simply fill the skillet with hot water and let soak until you are able to clean it.
  • If some of the mixture splatters onto you, lower heat and immediately run your wound under semi-cool water. If it continues to hurt or gets worse, contact a physician immediately. Do not put ice on the wound.
