How to make pencil marks less visible

After rubbing out pencil, there often do remain deep marks on the paper. When something is supposed to look new, this can be a problem.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • a rubber
  • a pencil
  • a sheet of paper
Step1
Start by rubbing out the pencil marks using a rubber. There exists another "How To" on the different possibilities how to do that.
Step2
Put another empty sheet of paper on your original (it's good if it's thin paper, so you can see something through, but it shouldn't be too thin). On the area above the pencil mark you want to make disappear, start "painting" the area with the pencil with dense firm strokes.
Step3
You have to apply some pressure, because the trick is that you compress the paper _around_ your unwanted pencil marks in the same manner as the pencil marks themselves.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice with some uncritical paper before attacking your original, because there is a certain danger that you only make things worse. Best would be if you have some more paper sheets of the same type/quality as the original
  • Especially check the following:
  • (a) I once heard that every paper has got a "fibre direction", and for my example there was a strong difference in the effect when "painting" horizontally or vertically.
  • (b) After painting an area, there is the danger that the original paper becomes waved in these areas. Only by practicing you can find out how to minimize that effect.
