Parakeets are normally social birds, but you can still enjoy them with out touching them or causing stress to them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • lots of toys for the cage
  • millet treats
  • swings
  • mirrors

Step1
First things first, if you do have parakeets that don't like to be touched, is excepting it. That is hard for little children, but they are still great little birds. Make sure you have a decent size cage. Place several toys in the cage. I have found that mirrors, colorful toys, perches, swings, or bells are very enjoyable. They also really like the millet treats and it will cause alot of excitement too. However, like little children they are playful with the toys and may break them but that is okay. It has given my family hours of fun watching our birds play on the swings, trying to ring the bells and talk to the mirrors.
Step2
Talk to your birds. I have heard some people say you can train a parakeet to talk, but I haven't seen it yet. If you talk to them daily, they get used to your voices and may tweet or whistle back at you. It also will help them to get used to the enviorment. My birds tend to try to talk to the vaccum cleaner and the rainforest sound machine we have. When you talk to them, watch their heads turn toward you and try to figure you out.
Step3
Just enjoy the sounds they make and the thinks they do with their toys. If they don't care to be touched then don't try to. It will stress them out more than need be. They will hop around the cage, try to fly, play with the toys, and talk to each other. I love the sounds they make when they talk to the mirrors and to each other. Just enjoy the birds and try to keep them stress free. They are great pets to have. My children, nieces and nephews love them and enjoy them, even if they can't touch or hold them.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do try to hold a bird that isn't real sociable with humans then it may nip or bite you.
  • If they don't want to be held don't try.
  • They could also fly off and be very hard to get back in the cage.
