Pressed Flower Ornaments

Add pressed flowers and leaves to eggs for hanging in windows or Christmas trees

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tiny pressed flowers and leaves
  • Fast drying glue
  • Whole eggs shells drained
  • Silk or other cord for hanging
  • Mod Podge or any other protective sealant of your choice
  • Q-Tip and toothpick
  1. Step 1

Using a small pointed object, carefully put a small hole through the top an d bottom of a raw egg. The hole should be large enough to accommodate your hanging cord. Let it drain. It may be necessary to poke the yolk inside to get it to drain completely. Wash out the interior of the egg and let it dry.

  2. Step 2

Assemble your dried flowers and leaves - See tips for selecting material that works best.

  3. Step 3

Nest the egg on a towel or other soft material to prevent it from rolling around while you are working on it.

  4. Step 4

Using a tooth pick, spread a small amount of glue about the same size as the flower you are about to add to the egg. Carefully place the material on the glue, and lightly press down with a Q-tip, rolling it out to the edges of each petal/leaf. The curvature of the egg can be challenging while adding plant material. See Tips on how to solve some of this.

  5. Step 5

Once all your plant material is added, let dry thoroughly.

  6. Step 6

Coat the egg is a sealant of your choice. Spraying or dipping is the easiest. If you use a brush, take care not to break off any parts. Add 2-3 coats and let dry.

  7. Step 7

String your cord into the top hole of the egg, then out the bottom hole of the egg. Secure with a knot. Beads can be added at the top and bottom for a finished look.

Tips & Warnings
  • Material Selection - Small papery flowers and leaves work best. Remove any stems or large bulky parts. Tiny seeds can be used. The key is to have material which will conform to the shape of the egg and not constantly be popping up.
  • Edges Keep Popping Up - Let the glue get a little tacky before applying the plant material, or keep rolling it with a dry Q-tip until it finally lays down.
  • Wash egg and wash your hands after handling the egg.

on 10/24/2009 This is a beautiful ornament. I will certainly make some of these. With all the dried flowers I have, it will be easy to make a bunch of these special ornaments that my family will love. When you are working with dried flowers you will understand the "Q-tip thing"! Thanks for the great idea.
