There are many small and easy things that individuals can do on a daily basis to help preserve the planet's eco system. The impact of these efforts seem minimal if you consider them by themselves. But, if done frequently and by a large number of people, the impact of each small thing can be substantial. Almost everyone eats lunch on a daily basis. However, in order to help the environment, that lunch must be packed daily in an eco friendly way. How to pack an eco friendly lunch can be accomplished using five easy steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Reusable containers
  • Plastic utensils
  • Homemade food
  • Cloth napkins
  1. Step 1

Pack your lunch in reusable containers. In other words, stay away from plastic and paper bags. This will allow you to do your part in preserving earth's resources by reusing the containers that carry the food.

  2. Step 2

If you must use utensils, stick with plastics and make sure to bring them home with you and recycle. Better yet, pack something for lunch that doesn’t require utensils or find alternatives to using them such as using a paper towel as a plate.

  3. Step 3

When packing a lunch the drink container is important as well. As part of an eco friendly lunch, use a plastic container and pour the beverage into it. To keep your drink cold, fill a plastic container half way with water and then place the container in the freezer. The following morning, simply pour your beverage into the container and your drink will stay cold all day. If an aluminum can is used because a plastic container is not available, make sure the aluminum is recycled properly.

  4. Step 4

Make your own food instead of purchasing it. Instead of purchasing chips and pre-made sandwiches, consider packing fresh fruits and home made chicken wraps. In fact, home made food not only saves the packaging used to sell products in stores, but it usually tastes better and keeps you filled up longer.

  5. Step 5

Finally, the last suggestion on how to pack an eco friendly lunch pertains to cleaning up after diner. Often individuals will pack a napkin to wipe their hands and their mouth. Instead of using paper napkins, which can be easily thrown away and added to the depletion of the eco system, consider an alternative. One of those alternatives is washable and reusable napkins.

Tips & Warnings
  • Organize a month of eco friendly lunches at the workplace to promote ecology.
  • Don't be deterred from being more eco friendly. Others may ridicule your seemingly small efforts, but take satisfaction from the fact that you are doing your part.
