1
Be funny. It may sound obvious, but it is often overlooked. And no, it isn’t enough that your mom laughs at your jokes.
-
2
Put yourself out there. Over, and over and over again. Like anything worthwhile, it's going to take time and effort. And like any art, which comedy is -a theatrical art--you need to hone your skills and perfect your craft. This is where being goofy in class isn't such a bad idea. Those kids by your side, after all, are your peers, your future audience. Try your stuff out on them.

3
Grab the Internet. YouTube is just dying to see you. The success stories of artists starting on YouTube are mounting every day. Hurry up and jump on the band wagon before it careens off the road and runs you over.
-
4
Emcee anything and everything. Your local church having a fashion show? You’re their man (or woman). No better way to get experience standing up in front of a crowd than by standing up in front of a crowd. Handle the gig, whatever it is with respect and professionalism, but don’t neglect to try out some of your material. Never miss the opportunity to perform for an audience.
-
5
Participate in open mike nights--they are absolutely a foot in the door. Don’t just try it. Try it again, and again, and again. You never know who’s in the audience who may just be looking for the next best act. Plus, the more you perform, the more you build your own loyal following.

Make a video of yourself (or fifty) and send them out. Conventional methods are fine, to agents, from New York to California, but it’s way easier and faster to jump on the information superhighway. Check out humor websites like those listed below to put your stuff out there to the masses.

Ask. Don't just wait to be discovered, go to the comedy club of your dreams and ask to be included in their line-up. If you've followed the previous steps, you should already have a following. What club owner doesn't want ready-made patrons coming to his establishment, laying down a cover and ponying up for some drinks?

Don’t give up.
