Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Good communication skills
- Good organizational skills
- The ability to read and learn about product
- A positive attitude
Step1
Learn product commission rates - - By being familiar with the percentage of commission each product pays, if a customer is caught up between two similar models, you know which one to push. While this should by no means get in the way of learning the customer's needs, part of being a salesman is attempting to sell the customer one model higher than the one they originally look at.
Step2
Learn product specs and be able to demonstrate - - By knowing the product and making customers feel comfortable with what they are about to purchase, you only increase your paycheck. Being knowledgeable about your products will put customers at ease, as you'll be able to answer their questions and quell their concerns. In your spare time, read product instruction manuals.
Step3
Look the customer in the eyes, and be honest - - No matter what the popular misconception may be, the most effective salesman is an honest salesman. By being dishonest to customers, you only hurt yourself through lost business and returned product. If you don't know the answer to a question, tell the customer, and then assure the customer that you will find the answer as soon as possible. Customer's will respect you honestly not knowing an answer much more than they will you lying about it.
Step4
Approach EVERY customer and ask if he or she needs assistance - - Think about it this way - every customer you don't assist will buy from someone else. Even if the customer does not look like he or she is going to purchase anything (another mistake: judging a customer based on appearance) asking if he or she needs any help will not hurt anything. Do NOT pester the customer, but the more customers you approach, the more sales you will make.
