Becoming a Wiccan or Witch is not something people are generally born as or randomly decide they want to become. Rather, it is usually something that comes to you through what you might call signs, or possibly other individuals.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need:

  • Research books/articles
  • Paper/Journal
  • Pen Pencil for notes
  • Any articles to be present for initiation ritual
  1. Step 1

    Feel the Desire

Silver RavenWolf, a noted high priestess and public authority on the topic states in her book To Ride a Silver Broomstick: "The Charge comes to each of us in a different manner. It is that moment in our lives when we feel the Magick of the Universe for the very first time coursing through us... and we know beyond all real and imagined shadows that this calling to the mysteries is indeed there. That it is truly there, and not a whimsical flight from reality." Let’s take a look at a few things you will need to have in order when venturing down the road of the craft, or Wicca.

  2. Step 2

    Researching the Craft

A very important step as with many things in life is to lay a solid foundation. You will want to get your hands on as much published information as you can. There are many great authors that write on a beginner’s level. This is perfect for understanding the basics of the craft. As mentioned earlier, Silver RavenWolf is a well noted author and public speaker on the topic. Hans Zimmerman has a wonderful book on the market today called “Witches” and covers in depth the history and challenges that the craft has faced since its origination. Wicca, a modern version of the craft has had such influences as Gerald Gardner, and Alex Crowley. They both have material available, but on a more intermediate to advanced level. Visit local craft marketplaces if available. Such cites as New York, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Seattle, and New Orleans all have wonderful shops available with a variety of books on the introduction of the craft. You can also join online groups or local community events.

  3. Step 3

    Write your Self Initiation Ritual

The material you record will help you create and write your dedication/self initiation ceremony and later you will use these writing to create your book of shadows. The final step, or first depending on how you look at it, is going to be your dedication ritual or initiation ceremony. This should be well prepared and custom to your own ideals and desires. Many advanced witches suggest that you never copy an initiation ceremony from a book or another witch. It should be your own. It should be conducted at a place that makes you feel safe and serene. Choose a lake shore, and clearing in the mountains, an empty plane, or even your own bedroom if you so choose.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choosing this path is an important decision in your life. It is the start of a beautiful thing. Know that it is what you want, learn as much about the life before committing to it, and when you commit to it, make a beautiful and personal endeavor.

on 3/4/2009 Ravenwolf is not Wiccan, and should not be used as a source. She is a phony and a fraud. Most Wiccans will correct you if you try to use Ravenwolf as a source.

on 2/6/2009 I don't agree with alot silverravenwolf has to say. I believe she is just in it for a profit, and has mislead many young children and adults to think magick will solve anything. It takes more than just copying it out of a book and doing it. It requires your full concentration, mind, body and soul. Just as christians believe wholehearted in prayer of god and jesus, you have to put forth the effort to accomplish a ritual. Television and movies have overglamourized such a beautiful thing as the meditation and art of casting.
