Paint chips are now available for purchase over the Internet or at your local home improvement store. They are packaged in bottles or jars and come in a variety of colors such as black and white or brown and white. They are small flecks of paint averaging from very small to about 1/2 in diameter. They can be used for a variety of projects to add a very different and decorative style that will resemble stone.

Things You'll Need:

  • Can of paint flecks
  • Can of paint
  • Can of sealer

    Using Paint Chips

  1. Step 1

Choose the object that you wish to use the paint chips on. This can be a patio floor, a garage floor, a desktop, a picture frame or any other type of craft.

  2. Step 2

Paint the surface with the desired color background paint and the appropriate type of paint. If using outdoors or on concrete, be sure to use exterior paint for the surface coat. Since you will be placing the paint chips when the paint is wet, you must work with small sections when doing floors.

  3. Step 3

Start to sprinkle the paint chips on the surface in a random pattern while the background is still wet. You can put on as much or as little as you want depending on the effect that is desired. It is similar to putting sprinkles on a cake. After this is done, let it dry completely preferably for at least one day.

  4. Step 4

Put on clear sealer once the entire surface is dry. The easiest way to do this is with a spray sealer. Spray in sections making sure that the entire surface is covered. For a glossy look, first spray a light coat of sealer, let dry and then roll on a high gloss sealer. This will make sure that the paint chips are adhered to the surface and will not be rolled up by the roller.

  5. Step 5

Let dry and cure completely and enjoy this new look for years to come. Since the surface is sealed, it will stand up well in high traffic areas if it has been done on a floor.

Tips & Warnings
  • When this is first done, some of the paint chips that did not adhere to the surface paint will come up. This is only temporary and after a few days, you will find that the rest have been secured by the paint and the sealer.
