Step 1
If you are a Medicaid recipient, you will receive a letter in the mail informing you that you must enroll in a Managed Care Plan (MCP) within a certain time period. If you do not enroll, one will be chosen for you. The problem is that some of your health care providers may not be in an MCP in your area.
-
Step 2
Medicaid does not tell you that there is an exception to enrolling in an MCP, and that is "Just Cause." If you have Just Cause to opt out of an MCP, then you may receive regular Medicaid and therefore visit the health care providers of your choice, as long as they accept Medicaid.
-
Step 3
Find out if you have Just Cause. If you have a long-term or serious health condition and are eligible for other medical assistance programs, chances are you have Just Cause. Call the case workers or representatives of any other medical benefits you receive and ask if their benefits give you Just Cause. Or, call your Medicaid case worker and ask them what constitutes Just Cause in your state.
-
Step 4
Finally, do call the MCP enrollment number Medicaid gives you, and make sure you call within the time frame stated. When you call, tell them that you would like to "opt out" of the MCP because you have "Just Cause." They'll ask what gives you Just Cause, so be prepared to tell them. Then, feel free to visit the physician of your choice.
