You found the perfect set of wooden chairs at a neighborhood garage sale, unfortunately, they are not in perfect condition. A few of the spindles have worked loose and all of them wobble. You envision those wooden chairs nestled around your pedestal dining table. Don't worry you can make the repairs yourself in one afternoon. Read on to learn how to repair wooden chairs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Masking tape
  • Marker
  • Deadblow hammer
  • 100-grit sandpaper
  • Small paint brush
  • Yellow carpenter’s glue
  • Bar clamps
  • Padded clamps
  • Damp cloth
  1. Step 1

Face the front of the wooden chair. Label all the parts with masking tape and a marker; number the spindles from left to right. This makes reassembly easier and less confusing.

  2. Step 2

Hold the chair firmly and use a dead blow hammer to separate the seat from the spindled back. Use a solid blow to dislodge the wooden spindles from the chair seat.

  3. Step 3

Turn the chair over. Examine the legs carefully for tiny concealed nails or screws and be sure to remove them all before disassembling the legs. Hold the chair upside down and use even strikes with the dead blow hammer to disengage the seat.

  4. Step 4

Use 100-grit sandpaper to remove the old glue from the spindle ends and the holes. Be thorough, old glue prevents new glue from bonding properly.

  5. Step 5

Coat the legs, leg rungs and seat holes with yellow carpenter’s glue using a small paintbrush and reassemble. The glue is fast drying; work quickly. Set the chair on a flat surface; check the alignment and be sure it is level. Clamp the seat, legs and rungs tightly, wipe off any glue drips with a damp cloth. Repair the spindle back in the same manner. Ensure proper alignment, clamp and let dry for 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • A flathead screwdriver with a groove filed in it is an excellent tool for removing the tiny nails from wooden chair legs.
  • Using a wooden mallet to remove the chair seat may mar the wood.
