How to Make Mock Fish Filets
Being a vegetarian does not mean that you have to sacrifice taste for nutrition. Though many vegetarians do eat chicken or seafood, some prefer not to. Here's how to make a tasty "mock fish" fillet that makes a great sandwich. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Oven
- Bowl
- Cookie sheet
- Whisk
- Spatula
- Spoon
- 1 12 oz. package of firm tofu--drained, patted dry, and sliced into 4 slices
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 1 tsp. kelp powder
- 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp. paprika
- 1/4 tsp. onion powder or flakes
- 1 tsp. salt
- Olive oil, as needed
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup dill pickle relish
- 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

Set your oven to 350 degrees F. and preheat it.

Combine your bread crumbs with the kelp powder, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder and salt.

Dip your sliced tofu into the olive oil and coat it on both sides.

Dip the tofu slices into the bread crumb mixture, patting the slices lightly to coat each side well.

Place the slices onto the cookie sheet and bake for approximately 30 minutes. While baking, make the tartar sauce that accompanies the mock fish.
Making the Tartar Sauce

Wash and dry a bowl until it is clean.

Add the mayonnaise, relish and lemon juice into a bowl.

Using a whisk mix the ingredients until well combined.

When one side of the fillet is crisp and golden brown, flip it and finish baking the other side.

Serve with tartar sauce on a whole wheat bun with your favorite fixings.

Tips & Warnings
You may brush the tartar sauce onto your bread and brown in the oven for added flavor.
Tartar sauce will keep for nearly two weeks so feel free to make it ahead of time.
Vegetarians who shy away from dairy may use instead of mayonnaise extra virgin olive oil infused with relish and lemon to brush onto the buns and mock fillet.
