How to Peel a Carrot for Less Waste

This is a way I've discovered to peel a carrot without cutting the top and bottom off.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • carrot
  • peeler
  1. Step 1

First, make sure the peeler selected has a good blade. A dull one will rip off more material than the peeling.

  2. Step 2

Peel carrot downward, away from yourself in strips. By this, I mean from top to bottom--the carrot would be laying down on a surface and be held in one hand.

  3. Step 3

Peel off top until there is no longer a dark/green part--which saves more carrot than cutting. Also, just peel the tip rather than cutting it off. Carrot peeled.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is good to have the carrot on something that will catch the peelings--especially if it is desired to throw it in a special container/compost heap.
  • If there is still some root past the tip on the carrot, just break it off.
  • When using something sharp it is always best to peel away from yourself.
  • be careful with sharp objects.

on 6/8/2008 Love the idea of peeling off the leafy part instead of cutting. I've heard that's where the most vitamins are.

Good article!
