Things You'll Need:
- Motocross helmet
- Neck-restraint system
-
Step 1
Use a Motocross (otherwise called an "off-road") helmet as the best method to protect your head from severe trauma. The Motocross helmet differs slightly from a standard "full-face" helmet. It provides an unprotected space from the eyebrows to the nose of the face-mask and offers extra protection at the forehead and chin. The extra chin-bar offers added protection for the entire cranium, as 35-percent of off-road accidents involve impact to the chin and face.
-
Step 2
Practice safe Motocross cycle behavior. Avoid tricks that you haven't frequently practiced and be sure to learn a course before you attempt it at full speed. Terrain differs greatly from course-to-course, and ignorance of a specific jump or obstacle can lead to collision or severe impact with the ground.
-
Step 3
Purchase a head-and-neck restraint such as the Leatt Brace for added cranial stability and a decreased risk of severe head trauma. The restraint acts as a simple brace that supports your head in the event of impact. Often, the cause of extensive head trauma is closely related with the skull's bounce after one is ejected from the cycle. The Leatt Brace alleviates a percentage of the head's free-movement upon impact.
-
Step 4
Include neck exercises in your strength training routine. The neck acts as a key stabilizer to the head and often gives way under the force of impact. Strengthen the muscles that support your head and give yourself a better chance of walking away from a serious accident with reduced head trauma.
