Step 1
Measure the length of your dog to make sure you purchase a bed that will be large enough for your dog to sleep in comfortably. Pet owners may go to buy a dog bed and then speculate on whether or not the bed they choose is large enough. It is best to go prepared. The bed should be both long and wide enough to accommodate the pet especially if it is a large dog.
-
Step 2
Decide on a price range that will fit your budget. Dog beds can range from inexpensive to quite expensive for designer types. Have an idea of what you are looking for and what you are willing to spend before you begin to shop.
-
Step 3
Keep your dog's health in mind when shopping for the proper bed. Does your dog have arthritis or a health condition that may require a specific type of bed? For example, would it be easier for your pet to sleep in a raised bed or a low bed. Would a water bed or memory foam bed that contours to the shape of your dog's body be beneficial to his health? If you are not sure what type of bed would be best for your dog's health ask your veterinarian for suggestions.

Step 4
Consider the climate. Do you live in an area where it is hot or cold all year long? Does your dog stay outdoors or indoors? You can purchase a heated dog bed or one that remains cool. If you will be placing the bed in a dog house make sure that it will fit properly.
-
Step 5
Look for beds with removable covers if you want to purchase a bed that will be easy to clean.
-
Step 6
Purchase a bed that is portable if you plan to use it when traveling. There are different types that offer ease of transport when going on vacation or taking a trip.
