"TV, Theatre and Movie Styles" is an improv game made famous by the hit television show "Whose Line Is it Anyway?" This is a game that is a true crowd-pleaser and is relatively easy to perform.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One host
  • Two players
  • Notepad or piece of paper
  • Pen or pencil

Playing "TV, Theatre and Movie Styles" in Improv

  1. Step 1

The host asks the audience to suggest TV, theatre and movie styles -- such as horror, musical, melodrama, and so on. The host should write down a few of these suggestions on the notepad (or piece of paper) for reference during the skit.

  2. Step 2

After soliciting the different styles, the host then asks the audience for a non-geographical location and an unrelated object. The host repeats the items to the two players.

  3. Step 3

The host then explains the game to the audience as the two players quickly plan out the framework of the skit. It is important that the players have a little direction, so that they do not end up with a pointless scene that has no end.

  4. Step 4

The host then introduces the two players at the non-geographical location with the object.

  5. Step 5

The players begin their scene in a natural way, without any type of styling. After the scene is established, the host shouts "FREEZE!" and calls out one of the TV, theatre or movie styles that were suggested by the audience.

  6. Step 6

The two players continue their scene in the style called out by the host.

  7. Step 7

The host gives the players no more than one minute to act in the style called, then yells "FREEZE!" again and calls a new style. The two players continue their scene in the style called out by the host. This step can be repeated as many times as the host wants, as long as the audience is still laughing.

  8. Step 8

When there is one suggestion left on the paper, or if the host wants to bring the scene to an end, she yells, "FREEZE! Okay, last one," then announces the style of the scene.

  9. Step 9

The players continue the scene in the final style, then end it and exit the stage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Players should be "over the top" in performing all of the styles called.
  • Do not use similar styles back-to-back (like following drama with melodrama).
