How to Make a Ferret Cage

Ferrets can be a big part of your life because they can be great pets that you will always cherish. For your ferret to be happy, though, you must make sure that he is living in a great habitat for ferrets. It is important to know what your ferret needs and to provide him with a good home.

Things You'll Need

• Glass cage with a solid wall and a floor
• Attachable second floor
• Ferret bedding
• Wire, wooden or plastic ramp
• Food and water dishes

Instructions

1. Buy the materials to make a fantastic cage. Ferrets are very playful creatures.

2. Use a large tank that is either specially made for a ferret or big enough to hold him. You can have more than one ferret per cage, as long as there is room. The cage should have glass walls, or if the walls are made out of wire, the gaps should not be big enough to let your ferret's feet slip through and get stuck.

3. Create a floor that is good and solid. This should be a floor that the ferret cannot get stuck in and that will not hurt him. Be sure that the floor is solid, but also that it is nonporous so that it can be cleaned easily.

4. Put a roof on the cage. Your roof should be made up of mesh or another type of material that allows air to circulate. Remember that your ferret needs fresh air each day, so be sure that it comes into the cage. Also, be sure that the roof cannot be pushed open by the ferret and that you can easily open it from the outside.

5. Make some levels in the cage. Ferrets like to have ramps and levels to climb on and live on. If you can attach ramps and various levels to your cage, try to do so. If not, consider building a wooden or plastic structure that your ferret can climb on during the day in his cage.

6. Build or add a place for your ferret to sleep. Ferrets like to be cuddly, so if you have more than one ferret, be sure that there is room for all of them to sleep together. You can get a sleeping hammock from a pet store, and if you hang this in an accessible place inside the cage, your ferret will be happy to sleep in it. He'll also like to sleep in small areas where he can curl into a ball.

7. Add fresh bedding. Be sure that you have purchased bedding from a pet store that is good for ferrets, or that you have found a material that will not harm them. Add the ferret bedding to the bottom of the ferret cage, and your ferret will be happy enough in his new home. Don't forget to add food and water dishes as well!

• Ferrets like to run and play, so give yours plenty of time outside the cage to exercise! He'll be happier and healthier that way.

• Remember that his cage should be full of things for him to do.

• Don't use materials that might make him sick.
