How to Overcome Shyness Before a Date

  1. Step 1

Adopt a positive attitude. Imagine yourself having a fantastic time. Tell yourself that you are going to enjoy the experience. Don't dwell on dates you had in the past. Don't worry about any dates you will have in the future. Prepare to enjoy your date.

  2. Step 2

Plan your date. Overcome your shyness by preparing for your outing. Focus on what you will do and where you will go. Planning your outing helps to distract your mind from those troubling “what if” scenarios.

  3. Step 3

Consider what you already know about the person you are meeting. Knowing a little bit about the person will be helpful in terms of asking questions or paying the person a compliment. Reviewing the facts in advance will enable you to relate your life experience to the person your dating, which is always a great way to break the ice.

  4. Step 4

Tend to your hygienic needs with a shower and a shave. Wear something flattering, but suitable for the occasion. If you feel as though you are at your best, you will be at your best. And feeling good about yourself goes a long way to reduce feelings of shyness on a date.

  5. How to Overcome Shyness While on a Date

  6. Step 1

Relax. Breathe deeply. Breathing deeply, as opposed to taking shallow breaths, helps to calm your nerves by breaking the cycle of tension. Enjoy the moment. Relish the opportunity to meet someone new.

  7. Step 2

Be honest. Admit to your date that you are shy at times. Conveying your shyness will prevent giving your date the impression that you are not interested or that you are not enjoying yourself.

  8. Step 3

Focus on your date's feelings and needs. Show respect for your date and the effort the person has made to meet you. Try to make your date feel comfortable. Concentrating on someone else will take you mind off your own worries, thereby making you feel less self-conscious. Feeling less self-conscious will help you to overcome shyness on a date.

on 8/29/2008 Good tips! Shyness has been something that I've struggled with my whole life. I've learned to modify it and lessen it, but I still have that shy inclination.
