Step 1
Go to your local animal shelter and ask if they have any lizards available. If they do, inspect the lizards. Check for mites hidden underneath their scales, and for deformities and erractic behavior. You don't want a pet lizard with any of these problems, especially if you have children.
-
Step 2
Locate your closest reptile organization. These are usually conservation groups that meet monthly and work to promote awareness, as well as find homes for abandoned or newborn reptiles.
-
Step 3
Attend a meeting and ask questions about raising the lizard; solicit general care tips. Ask if there are any lizards available for adoption. If there are -- and you think you're ready after learning about their care -- go for it.
-
Step 4
Fill out the application. Most organizations want to know who is adopting their animals, and some will come inspect your home to ensure that it is suitable for the animal. Many organizations will require you to pay a small fee or make a donation.
-
Step 5
Purchase a proper aquarium/tank, bedding, food and other accessories. When you are approved, select your lizard or accept one you are given. Bathe it and take it home. Enjoy your new pet!
