How to Tie a Lightermans Hitch

The Lighterman's Hitch is a knot that is readily used to moor tug boats and other floating vessels to the dock. It is also known as a Tug Knot because of this. This knot can also be used to tie pretty much anything to any kind of stationary post.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Long piece of strong nylon rope
  • Post
  1. Step 1

    Wrap the working end of your rope over the post two times.

  2. Step 2

    Bring the working end toward the direction you started from.

  3. Step 3

    Form a loop and loop it under the stationary section of rope while holding on to the working end.

  4. Step 4

    Bring the loop over and slide the end over the standing end of the post.

  5. Step 5

    Bring the working end over the stationary part of the rope where you began.

  6. Step 6

    Wrap the working end over the stationary rope and over the standing end of the post and then back down over the stationary rope.

  7. Step 7

    Pull on the stationary end to remove the slack.

Tips & Warnings
  • Great for tying up boats to a dock.
  • Always be careful when handling nylon rope as if it gets away from you, it can cut deep.
