An approach in step aerobics basically refers to the location in which you start your sequence of 4- or 8-count steps. For the top approach, you start with both feet on the aerobics step or bench. Typically, the top approach is used in conjunction with another step, such as the straddle, mambo, lunge and shuffle.

    Top Approach Lunge Step

  1. Step 1

Start with both feet standing on the aerobics bench. For the sake of this example, you should position yourself facing to the side so your feet run parallel with the bench.

  2. Step 2

Incorporate a top approach into a 4-count lunge. Lift your left foot up and tap it down onto the floor to your left. This is your first count.

  3. Step 3

Bring your left foot back up and place it in its starting position next to the right. This is your second count.

  4. Step 4

Lift your right foot and tap it down onto the floor to your right for your third count.

  5. Step 5

Bring this foot back up and place it next to your left for your fourth count. You've just completed a 4-count top approach lunge.

  6. Top Approach Straddle Step

  7. Step 1

Incorporate a top approach into a 4-count straddle step. Position yourself on the bench with your feet running parallel with the long sides.

  8. Step 2

Lift your left foot and bring it down to the ground on the left side of the bench, shifting your weight onto this foot. This is count 1.

  9. Step 3

Lift your right foot and bring it down to the ground on the right side of the bench, this time shifting your weight to this foot. This is count 2.

  10. Step 4

Lift your left foot again and step back up onto the bench for your third count, shifting your weight again to this foot.

  11. Step 5

Lift your right foot and step up onto the bench, placing it next to your right, for your fourth count.
