Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  1. Step 1

Look for good driving discounts. The easiest way to get cheap car insurance is to have a good, safe driving record. Each insurance provider will have different discounts and different ways of determining those who qualify for discounts.

  2. Step 2

Bundle your insurance policies. You can generally save up to 15 percent, sometimes more, by having your car, homeowners, renters, boat and life insurance policies through the same insurance company. Customer loyalty is worth money in the insurance industry.

  3. Step 3

Look For good credit discounts. Your credit score will affect your auto insurance rates. Of course, all companies have different means of incorporating this into their rate quotes. Thus, if you have good credit, it will be beneficial to go with an auto insurance provider that heavily considers your credit history.

  4. Step 4

Look for student discounts. Students with good grades are given car insurance discounts by many auto insurance providers. Most insurance companies consider students with good grades less of a risk, therefore, they offer discounted rates for good grades. There is generally an age limit of about 25 for receiving this discount.

  5. Step 5

Look for safety feature discounts. Safety features lower the overall risk and cost of an auto accident, so car insurance companies want to encourage safety features on your vehicles. Things such as air bags, anti-lock brakes and fog lights could lower your car insurance rates.

  6. Step 6

Look for anti-theft features discounts. Features such as a car alarm, electronic key ignitions and steering wheel locking devices can reduce the risk of your vehicle being stolen. This, of course, reduces your risk of having to put in a claim against your car insurance provider.

  7. Step 7

Get comparison rate quotes. Car insurance rates vary greatly from car insurance company to car insurance company. If you are serious about finding cheap auto insurance, you should get rate quotes from multiple car insurance providers in your area. You should get anywhere from three to five rate quotes to make an informed choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your car will have a great deal to do with how high your car insurance rates become. A cheaper vehicle, or one not associated with teenage drivers, will allow you to be eligible for cheaper car insurance.
  • When getting rate quotes, try getting them from large nationwide car insurance providers as well as local providers.
  • Some car insurance companies now offer discounts for cars that are efficient when it comes to gas mileage, or that have other green features.
  • Make sure you understand the eligibility requirements for each company's discounts.
  • Make sure you understand your state's laws regarding minimum car insurance requirements. The Resources section of this article will allow you to look up this information and more about your state's regulations.

on 3/6/2009 All of this is great advice. What is also very important is having an agent you can trust. The best way to do that is ask people you know and believe, who is there agent. Then ask them about the experiences they had when having to file a claim. That will tell you a lot.
