How to Build Muscle at Home Without a Weight Set
At one time or another, we have all resolved to build more muscle and get in shape. But with a lot of money and time going to other things, that membership at the gym isn't always feasible. So here are a few steps to take to burn muscle at home without an official weight set.
Things You'll Need
- Milk jugs (various sizes)
- Water, sand or rocks
- Household items such as canned goods

Analyze where you are at in terms of health, fitness and muscle-building. Your answer will determine how fast you go and what weights you start with.

Save 2 of each size of milk jug (quart and 1/2 gallon). If you have larger containers at home, those will work too. Just make sure they have a lid to secure them tightly. If you are not ready for milk jugs, start with cans of corn.

Fill the jugs with water. Or, if you are ready for heavier weights, fill them with sand or rocks.

Use your scale at home to make sure they are similar in weight.

Set a daily time and routine to workout. Maybe after the kids are in bed, before they wake up, during a lunch break at work or while watching your favorite show. The weights are small enough that you can use them anywhere.

Tell someone else about your routine so they can follow up. Better yet, find someone (a spouse) to workout with you. That way you will keep each other on your routine.

Make your routine progressive. Start by curling, or benching, 10 times in a row. Do that a couple days in a row, then increase to 15, then 20, etc.

Combine these exercises with other methods of weight lifting. Google different types of exercises--it is a sure bet you can substitute your weights for the traditional ones or add weights to it to make it tougher.

Be creative as you come up with other ways of adding muscle. Maybe you add straps and put them on the ends of your feet to work your legs. Put them in a backpack and do push ups. The possibilities are endless.

Scour the house for other things to lift. Or lie on your back and lift the edge of the bed (with your hands or feet) 10 times. You will be surprised how many things can be turned into weights and how fast you will build muscle--all from the comfort of your own home and with no monthly membership fee.
