As a website owner or manager, you’ll improve your search engine rankings by getting more backlinks to your website. Backlinks are links back to your website from other websites. Follow these steps to get backlinks for a website.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Email and web access
  1. Step 1

Submit your website to directories. Many website directories are free and quick to sign up and add your website for an immediate backlink (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Market your website through articles. Article marketing is a free way to generate traffic and one way backlinks.

  3. Step 3

Trade links with related websites. Search online for complimentary (not competitor) websites and email the webmaster to offer a mutually beneficial, reciprocal link exchange.

  4. Step 4

Add your website to multiple bookmarking and social networking websites. It’s simple and takes a few minutes to sign up for websites where you can bookmark your favorite websites including your own, for immediate backlinks. Try Squidoo, Digg, Stumbleupon and Technorati (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Post ads on classified sites like Craigslist.org and USFreeAds.com (see Resources below). Craigslist is free and takes a few minutes to post an ad in the small business section for your city.

  6. Step 6

Write and distribute online press releases. PR is a highly effective way to market a business. Online press releases will also generate more backlinks to your website for improved search engine rankings and more traffic.

Tips & Warnings
  • Target high pagerank (PR) websites such as EzineArticles.com and Craiglist.org for higher quality links. For bookmarking, use a multiple bookmarking tool like SocialMarker.com to speed up the process. Consider hiring a search engine optimization (SEO) writer for website content, ads and press releases (see Resources below).
  • Do not grow too fast and generate too many backlinks in a short time. Suspicious, unnatural activity may appear to be a “black hat” tactic and your website may be penalized by the search engines.
