1
Recognize stereotypes associated with Muslims. The term "Muslim" refers to a follower of the Islamic religion and is not a race classification. There are different belief systems within the Islamic religion as with Christianity or any organized religion. The radical actions of a few do not characterize the actions of the entire group.

2
Approach with the right level of confidence. Acting nervous may be interpreted as fear or even hostility. Overconfidence may be seen as being arrogant or condescending.

3
Focus on commonalities. Do you work in the same department or listen to the same music? This focus will allow for a more relaxed conversation. As you become more comfortable with the person, the topics you talk about will expand.
-
4
Watch your body language. Avoid staring at clothing such as the hijab, even though it may seem different to you. Allow for comfortable personal space by refraining from high fives, hugs, and handshakes while talking.
-
5
Keep religious judgments to yourself. Religion is a sensitive topic and personal for each individual. Avoid making negative or overly positive comments about any aspect of the Islamic religion or it's followers.
-
6
Be yourself.
