How to Get a Higher Search Engine Ranking

  1. Step 1

Check current search engine ranking for your website by typing in your keywords in the search engine. Track the date and position for each keyword phrase to see how it improves with each change.

  2. Step 2

Review the competition. Look at the websites that are listed on the first page of the search engine results for your chosen keyword phase. Study the keyword density, titles, and other text and image placement to determine what makes it rank higher.

  3. Step 3

Check your website’s keyword density, which is the number of keywords divided by the total words on the page. Edit the web page to include 4% - 6% keyword density for a keyword phrase using research from Step 2.

  4. Step 4

Update the website more often. Improve existing pages and add new pages with more keyword phrases to target. Search engines prefer websites that have quality content and regular updates. Adding more pages increases your chances of being discovered online from a keyword search.

  5. Step 5

Get more backlinks through social bookmarking websites, article directories, and reciprocal link exchanges. Search engines reward websites that have more links pointing to it. Reciprocal links help but relevant, one-way links are better.

  6. Step 6

Let the website age. Older websites get higher rankings in the search engines. Search engines equate a longer history with a higher quality website. In the first few months of a website, it may be more difficult to be ranked high in search engines for your keywords.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose keywords with high demand and low supply by checking Wordtracker’s keyword tool and Google search. Consider buying a domain name that contains your primary keyword phrase for a boost in search engine rankings. Consider hiring a search engine optimization (SEO) writer to develop or edit website content.
  • Do not overdo your keywords--never go above a 6% keyword density rate. Do not try to hide your keywords, spam, or use questionable websites like free-for-all sites for marketing. Search engines will penalize your site for black hat tactics.
