1. Plan to make Wilmington, the port city that sits between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean, a home base for your visit. Check out the downtown scene in the Historic District. It's packed with landmarks, shops, restaurants, and museums. Restored homes and buildings are now shelter shops, inns, B&Bs and historic sites.
2. Start your visit on the Cape Fear Coast. With its scenic shoreline, tranquil inland waterways and historic towns where you can teach the kids about history, this region is the perfect vacation spot.
3. Soak up some sun and enjoy family-friendly attractions on white sand stretches of the island communities of Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, an alternative to the crowded resorts up north and down south.
