    Use Modeling Clay Texturing Tools

  1. Step 1

Select and use textured slab molds to create intricate or repeating motifs. These molds come in many different varieties and are great for adding specific ethnic or geometric designs to pots, tiles and other modeling-clay pieces. To use these tools, you first need to roll out your clay so that it is pliable and the proper shape and size for the mold. Next, press the clay onto the mold. Make sure the clay is pressed firmly into the mold to ensure that the entire texture is transferred to your modeling clay. Finally, remove the clay from the mold and use it to decorate your final piece.

  2. Step 2

Scrape a texture into your clay using a triangular comb. These texturing tools can be made from plastic or metal. Each tool offers three different textures to choose from. To use this tool, you simply select the texture side you want to use and then scrape it across the clay.

  3. Step 3

Create curves, angles or textures using a texture rib. Each rib has a specific angle, curve or texture cut into its tip. To use this tool, simply draw the tool across the edge of the modeling clay. This action will remove extra modeling clay and create a finished edge.
