Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Start on paper. Like any other business, you will need a plan. This includes a business plan, marketing strategy and financial needs. This will allow you to see what the start-up needs will be and will allow you to see the vision that you want to reach. Remember to register your business with the IRS before you move further.
Step2
Decide on the fish. One of the most important things that helps a fish farm to grow is determining the specialized fish that will be grown. You will want to determine whether you want a white or red fish, as well as if you want more than one type of fish. This will determine exactly how everything is set up around the farm.
Step3
Build a fish home. Depending on the type of fish you decide to get, you will need to build a habitat that works effectively for them. For example, if you have a fresh water fish that needs warmer waters, you will need to make sure that you have lakes and ponds for the fish as well as a way to maintain the water temperature. Many times, fish farms will filter in water from one main pump that keeps the temperature at a certain level and keeps everything clean. In relation to this, make sure that you get enough land to give your fish space to swim.
Step4
Build a fish system. While you are putting together a fish habitat, you need to remember how you will keep everything in order. If you have fish, you will want to breed them as well. Having a breeding pond in one area will be important for this. In another area, you can keep fish that you don't want to breed and can take out of the area in order to sell. In each of these places, make sure that there is a system to keep the water clean, keep the fish fed and to pump the water in and out of the system.
Step5
Find the market. Once you have begun to implement the system so that the fish can continue to be used, monitored and bred, you can start growing and selling the fish. You will want to find small stores that want fresh fish, as well as larger stores that you can easily ship to in order to make a profit off of your fish. While you are doing this, make sure that you know whether you will be shipping them live or not and find the correct tools in order to get them to the market.
