Things You'll Need:
- open end box end wrench
- safety glasses
- putty knife
- Spray gasket remover (optional)
- New differential gasket
- ratchet set (optional)
- Inch pound torque wrench (optional)
-
Step 1
Remove all old gasket material from the mounting service using a putty knife. Do not use a hammer to loosen the old gasket material. This will cause dents in the mounting service and the gasket and cover will not mount properly. If old gasket material is hard to remove with the putty knife, use spray gasket remover first and then the putty knife. Be careful not to nick the mounting surface as this will cause leaks.
-
Step 2
Once all the old gasket material is removed from the cover and mount service, place new gasket on the mounting surface. Be sure to match bolt holes in gasket to bolt holes in mounting surface. Use a bit a grease to hold the gasket in place while mounting the cover. Do not use silicone to hold the gasket in place because this will distort the gasket and cause leaks.
-
Step 3
Place cover onto the mounting surface and on top of the gasket. Make sure all hole are lined up. Start all the cover bolts two or three threads, and hand turn each bolt until the gasket is flush against the mounting surface.
-
Step 4
Use the open end box end wrench or ratchet set and tighten bolt in a star pattern so the the cover seats flush against the gasket and mounting surface.
-
Step 5
Remove differential plug, and fill with specified oil for the year model vehicle. Oil level is full when you can feel oil on your finger just below the plug.
