You need to replace the air filter on a lawnmower every three months for the average user and it is much easier to change this at the start of the lawn-mowing season as you prepare the lawnmower for the season in the annual tune up. Changing a paper air filter is essential because it filters out dirt and debris on the outside as the air flows thru the air filter and into the combustion chamber of the engine.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Look for the air filter compartment; it's likely a round shaped, but all mowers are different.

  2. Step 2

Loosen the screw that holds on the cover. You can spray this with a lubricant so that the screw is easy to remove. Remove the new paper air filter from the package and put it closer to you so that you can slide it into place.

  3. Step 3

Slide the cover down and off to the side and remove the used paper air filter from within the lawnmower--this will just lift out easily in a straight up motion--and place it in the empty air filter box.

  4. Step 4

Slide the new paper air filter with paper pleat out. This is the only way it fits. The paper air filter works and stops the dirt from entering the inner workings of the lawnmower.

  5. Step 5

Close the cover of the air filter compartment and tighten the screw securely and use the lawnmower as directed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only change the air filter on your cold mower. If you have used the lawnmower, let it sit for a few hours before doing any maintenance.
