Step 1
The first step is to tie a tight knot at the end of your practice rope. This is an important part of tying up a lariat for lassoing, as it will keep the Honda knot in its place while you are using the rope.
-
Step 2
Now begin to form the Honda knot by creating a simple overhand knot in the rope. Make sure to leave enough room at the end. The overhand knot itself is constructed by making a large loop with the rope and then passing the rope's end under and through to create a pretzel shape.
-
Step 3
The next step is to tighten up the overhand knot that you created so that there is only a small loop, with a small amount of space showing through its middle.
-
Step 4
Using the end of the rope, make another loop.
-
Step 5
Pass the end of the rope back through the overhand knot that you already created. Push down on the middle of the pretzel knot and push the rope through the gap between middle and top, rather than through the center of the knot. The rope should be going through close to the end of the rope.
-
Step 6
Pull gently on both ends of the rope, pushing up on the bottom of the knot as you pull on the ends. At this point, the end of your rope should have a well-formed loop.
-
Step 7
Continue to work at leveling the bottom of the knot head. You want the knot to be in a straight line on a horizontal level.
-
Step 8
Finish off the lariat by passing the ends of the rope through the loop that was created by the Honda knot. This will create a loop that is large and flexible, which is perfect for lassoing.
