Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Understand that each player serves for an entire game. Because there are six games in a set, each player should serve for three games of a set. The players alternate serving from the right and left sides of the court. When serving, the ball must bounce in the diagonal side of the court opposite the player before the player hits the ball. The server has only two chances.

  2. Step 2

In tennis, “love” means zero. The next point is 15. The second point is 30 and the winning point is 40.

  3. Step 3

The server must announce the score before each serve, saying their own score first.

  4. Step 4

If both players have the same score, the server says their score and then “all.” For example, if both players’ score is 30, the server will say “30-all.”

  5. Step 5

The ball is hit back and forth over the net. Only during the serve must the ball hit the ground before the player can return it. During the rest of the game, the players can hit the ball before it bounces on their side of the court.

  6. Step 6

A player earns a point when they hit the ball to their opponent and the opponent is unable to return the ball.
