These sandwiches are simple to prepare and a nice change from grilled cheese for a quick lunch or snack. Using good French bread does make a difference. Read on to learn how to make applesauce sandwich snacks.

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup chunky style applesauce
  • 8 slices French bread, cut from loaf
  • 1/4 cup softened butter or margarine
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  1. Step 1

    Slice French bread into eight 1-inch pieces. Remove butter or margarine from refrigerator to soften. In a small bowl, mix sugar and spices; set aside.

  2. Step 2

    Heat a large, heavy skillet over medium high heat on stove. Butter one side of each piece of bread.

  3. Step 3

    Spread applesauce on four of the slices and place each, butter side down, in pan. Top with other slice of buttered bread.

  4. Step 4

    Cook for four to five minutes, flipping once, until golden brown on both sides.

  5. Step 5

    Remove from pan, sprinkle cinnamon/sugar mixture over each sandwich, and cut in halves or quarters to serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also use homemade applesauce in this recipe.
  • Use medium high heat (no higher) or sandwiches may scorch.
