    How to Troubleshoot a Lawnmower

  1. Step 1

Check the gas tank. Make sure there is actual gas in the tank and not just a thin layer on the bottom.

  2. Step 2

Check the fuel filter. The fuel filter can become dirty and clogged, causing a restriction of gas to the engine. The fuel filter is usually located next to the engine where the fuel line enters the gas tank. If the filter is dirty, use a little water or an air hose to clean it out. If the filter still looks dirty, buy a new one from any hardware store.

  3. Step 3

Check the air filter. A dirty air filter can cause the lawnmower to not start. The air filter is located by the exhaust in a small container. Remove the air filter and clean it with an air hose. If the air filter is old and does not come clean, you will need to replace it.

  4. Step 4

Check the sparkplug. Many times the sparkplug will become fouled and not spark. Turn the sparkplug counter clockwise to remove. If the sparkplug looks dirty or faulty, replace it with a new one.

  5. Step 5

Troubleshoot the carburetor. If the carburetor is gummed up, use a carburetor cleaner to remove the foreign material. If the mower still does not start, try turning the screws that control the air and gas mixture. Turn the screw until the mower runs completely smooth.

Tips & Warnings
  • If these steps do not work, take the lawnmower to a repair shop.
  • Never keep gas in the lawnmower through the winter. Drain the gas tank before putting the lawnmower away.
  • Wear safety glasses when following these troubleshooting tips.
