If you are new to an area, or new to owning livestock, you may find yourself needing to buy feed and/or medication for your animals, but unsure of where or how to go about doing it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Phone Book
  • Transportation
  • Ability to ask questions of strangers

    Do some research

  1. Step 1

Use a computer. Choose a search engine and type in the keywords "Livestock feed" and then your city's name. Your search engine should be able to pull up some results in your area. You can then call that store and ask them if they have what you need. If you are looking for medications, depending on what kind of medication it is, you should be able to get it at the local feed store. A prescription medication will need to be bought from your local veterinarian. There are also many companies that offer online ordering for pet medications and supplies. Do a computer search for "Livestock Supplies" or "Horse Vaccines" and you should come up with several choices.

  2. Step 2
    Use your phone

Another method is the tried and true phone book. In very small or rural towns, computers may not yet be used as commonly as phone books. So get out your local phone book and look under the word "Feed," "Horse," or "Livestock." One of these categories should have a feed store noted under them. If not, look up a local veterinarian and call their office and ask for their help.

  3. Step 3

If you live in the country, and have neighbors that have livestock, don't be afraid to knock on their door and ask them where they buy their supplies. Neighbors, especially in rural areas, can be lifesaving helpers that will give you a wealth of information no computer or phone book could supply.

  4. Step 4

If you have located a store that sells tack or other animal items, ask the manager if they have a bulletin board where locals post their want ads. Sometimes you can find feed supplies this way, especially when looking to buy hay or other crop items. Another tried and true classic is the local newspaper. Their classified section will have a spot for animals, livestock, farm and garden, or something similar. Don't be afraid to call some numbers and ask questions. Explain your situation, and you will find people are usually more than willing to help.

  5. Step 5

Finally, if you have no access to a computer, phone book, or newspaper - use your phone and call "411" for Directory Assistance. Ask them for TWO numbers to feed stores in your town and/or the surrounding areas. Many people do not realize that you can receive two numbers when you call Directory Assistance. Jot these numbers down and make the calls. If you follow one or all of these steps, you will find the items you need.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember, not all medications you may need will be available to you without a veterinarian's prescription
