Visiting the famous Prado Museum is a must. Even if you are not heavily into the art scene, you will likely find this museum facinating. It is packed full of old masterpieces, as well as some great pieces from some of Spain's more modern artists. One of the most famous pieces of art housed here is the famous Guernica wall painted by none other than Pablo Piccasso. The picture depicts a horrible scene fromthe attack on the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The hardest of hearts are moved by this painting.

Seeing the Madrid football stadium is worth it, especially if you're touring with an avid football fan. The club's history is laid out for you, and with any luck, you may even score tickets to one of the games.

Hop onto Madrid's public transportation system and within 30 minutes you'll be transported to the palace of Felipe the second, the famous El Escorial. While visiting El Escorial, you may want to see the valley of the fallen, a touching monument erected in honor of those who died in the Spanish Civil War. Finally, a little farther out of Madrid is the famous University of Salamanca. Many of Spain's most famous authors studied there, including Miguel de Cervantes, the author of "Don Quixote."

Madrid has all of the excitement of New York, Paris and Los Angeles. Just strolling through the city center and admiring the architecture is a great way to spend the day.
Madrid is quite safe, but do take precuations. There is a high amount of pickpockets and petty theft, as in any big city.
