Steaming vegetables can be a quick and easy way to serve a healthy side dish, without losing nutrients or flavor. Read on to learn how to make steamed vegetables.

Things You'll Need:

  • Vegetables of choice
  • Steamer basket
  • Large pot
  1. Step 1

    Begin to make steamed vegetables by placing a steamer basket into a large pot with 1 or 2 inches of water.

  2. Step 2

    Bring the water to a boil and in the meantime, clean and slice vegetables before placing them into the steamer basket. By cutting larger vegetables, you are able to even out cooking time so that all pieces are done consistently.

  3. Step 3

    Cover the boiling pot once the vegetables are placed into the steamer basket. Most vegetables only take one or two minutes to steam completely through, but more hearty vegetables may take three or four minutes. Check that they are tender before removing them from the basket.

  4. Step 4
    Served steamed vegetables.

    Serve immediately to prevent vegetables from getting cold or soggy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Steaming is the best way to keep nutrients within the vegetable.
  • Be sure to check the vegetables before taking them out of the basket, and make sure they are tender.
