Every drummer knows how important Snare Drum placement is in a drum set. It can make the difference between good forearm clearance and awkward forearm positioning. This article will teach you how to position a Snare Drum in relation to other Drums in a Set.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Drum Set with 3 pieces or more.

  1. Step 1

Unfold the Snare Stand and place the Snare Drum on the grip arms. Tighten the grip arms until they clasp the bottom rim of the drum. You should be able to pick up the drum and stand without the two becoming unattached. There is a swivel adjustment on the stand that will allow you to angle the drum. For now, just tighten it well enough for the drum to remain steady. You can fine tune the position later.

Place Snare, with attached Stand, to the left of the Bass Drum Pedal. (Reverse if left handed). Assuming that you have already adjusted your Drum Throne to a proper height level, place the Throne in front of the Snare. Now, sit with your legs straddling the Snare Drum. Place your feet on the Bass Drum and Hi-Hat pedal. You are ready to fine tune and adjust the Snare Stand.

  3. Step 3

Fine tune the adjustments! Adjust the height of the Stand to just above your thighs. This will allow your forearms plenty of clearance when you strike the Snare. Then, loosen the angle to a position that fits your playing style. Hold the snare in that position with one hand and tighten the stand with the other.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep adjusting! It will take a few playing sessions to find the perfect Snare Drum height and angle.
  • Make sure to tighten down securely after each adjustment or the Snare may sink below where you want it. That could really ruin your vibe in the middle of a performance!
