Curly hair is gorgeous but it takes some effort to get those silky ringlets. Without proper care you may end up with a halo of frizz and tangles. These steps can help you tame that curly hair and get the most out of your curls.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Comb your hair. Before you wash your hair, you always want to comb it to get all of the tangles out. One of biggest mistakes anyone can make if they have curly hair is to brush it out after they shampoo and condition their hair. It ruins curl formation and causes frizziness.

  2. Step 2

Shampoo and condition your hair. With lukewarm water, shampoo and condition your hair with the smoothing shampoo and conditioner. You want to use smoothing hair cleansing products because they tend to reduce frizziness while supplying your hair with moisture. If you feel your hair is getting knotted up, you can finger comb your hair when you have the conditioner in it.

  3. Step 3

Apply leave-in conditioner and hair serum. After you finish cleansing your hair, wrap it up in a towel and finish the rest of your routine. If you like to apply body lotion, now is the time to do it. First, apply the leave-in conditioner. Second, apply the hair serum. You want to apply the serum before you apply the other styling products because when you apply it over hair styling products it tends to make hair look stringy.

  4. Step 4

Apply your styling products. If you use any styling products such as gel or mousse, now is the time to apply them. Start at the bottom of your hair and scrunch the products into your hair. If you like extra body, bend over so your hair is hanging down and scrunch.

  5. Step 5

It’s time to plop. This is where the large shirt comes in. Lay the T-shirt on a flat surface such as a bed. Bend over and center your head and hair in the middle of the shirt. Slowly twist the ends of towel and then secure them with a rubber band. Tie the two ends of the shirt at the back of your head. The t-shirt looks similar to a turban. The process of plopping does wonders for curl formation. Leave the shirt in your hair for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Once the time is up, remove the T-shirt and shake your hair out. Apply more of your favorite styling product if you desire to do so.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learn more about plopping online (see Resources). If your hair needs extra conditioning, apply an intensive conditioner after you shampoo.
  • Do not plop your hair longer then 15 minutes. Otherwise, it may get frizzy.
