How to Follow the Rules of Christian Dating

Wanting the companionship of the opposite sex is a normal thing and there are all kinds of opportunities, both online and off, available to help you connect with other single people. Many of these opportunities, however, do not adhere to Christian standards. As a believer, you have to be cautious when it comes to the choices you make in meeting and dating others.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Always pray before you make any decision to go out with someone. Seek God's wisdom about whether he or she is the right person for you to date. God desires the ultimate best for you and that includes any kind of relationship you become a part of.

  2. Step 2

Make sure that the person you date shares your faith. Getting your feelings caught up in someone who rejects the spiritual and moral principles you stand for could result in your compromising your Christian standards. You need to be with an individual who helps to build and encourage your faith, not who weakens it.

  3. Step 3

Start off as friends. Resist the urge to try and "make" another person into your soul mate before you actually get to know more about him or her. Talk and find out what each other's hobbies, opinions and personalities are like. Take things slowly and allow them to build and, if things don't work out, at least you will have made a valuable friend.

  4. Step 4

Be careful about putting yourself in vulnerable circumstances. Even when you are dating another Christian, you can be tempted to do the wrong things. While "worldly" dating practices involve pressuring people into becoming intimately involved with someone they are not married to, Biblical standards dictate that you remain chaste. A good way to avoid temptation is to go out with another Christian couple, so you and your boyfriend or girlfriend will not be alone. If, however, you are still finding that you are constantly being enticed to be sexually active with the person you are dating, you may need to break off the relationship entirely.

  5. Step 5

Study the Bible together. As Christians, you and the person you are going out with should have a mutual love and respect for the Lord. Spending time in His Word together can help you bond together in a more positive way and make you mindful of the type of righteous life He wants you to lead.

  6. Step 6

Always put God first. Elevating any person above God can lead to your losing touch with your priorities. There is nothing wrong with wanting to find a life partner, but when you find yourself becoming so obsessed with another person that you neglect time with God, it may be necessary to step back for awhile, until you have put things in proper order.
