Being a mom at any age can be quite difficult, but moms still actively engaged in a parental role in middle age will encounter different issues than younger moms. Middle aged moms often have more patience - but less physical energy - than moms who are younger.

How to Be a Successful Middle Aged Mom

  1. Step 1

Define success? Before you can become a successful middle aged mom you need to decide what success means to you. Does it involve having healthy children? Does it mean that you balance work and home effectively? For many middle aged moms, success is discovered when they realize that they have everything they thought they would have at this age. When you consider your role as a middle aged mom, what comes to mind when you think about being successful?

  2. Step 2

Embrace your life experiences. You are in an excellent position to teach your children a wide variety of things about the world around them. You have an advantage over younger moms in this arena because your life experience and wisdom will serve you well as a mother. Part of being a successful mom at any age is equipping children to eventually enter the world on their own, and with the lessons you have undoubtedly learn you can teach your kids what they need to know.

  3. Step 3

Stay healthy. Middle aged moms can keep up with even the most rambunctious children as long as the moms make the effort to stay healthy and fit. Make sure to eat right, exercise regularly, and eliminate unnecessary stress from your life. The healthier you are, the more likely you will be able to get through the day with your kids and other demands without losing your pep. Successful moms have the energy necessary to keep up with their kids.

  4. Step 4

Don't lose your own identity. Although being a mother is a huge part of your life, you need to realize that eventually the kids will grow up and move away from home. You need to retain some of who you essentially are in order to someday reclaim yourself. A successful middle aged mom will have interests outside of her children because this makes her more well-rounded. If your entire life revolves around your children there is a good chance that you will be putting a great deal of stress on your kids. You need to be able to define yourself beyond your role as a middle aged mom.

  5. Step 5

Be flexible. With motherhood at any age, things have the potential to change from day to day. Rigidity and motherhood do not mesh well. Try to be flexible and keep your sense of humor flowing, because this will make everything much easier to deal with. A successful middle aged mom can laugh at the jelly stain on the carpet while also knowing exactly how to clean it up. It's a tall order, but it can be done.
