Instructions

  1. Using Mantras in Yoga Practice

    • 1

Choose a mantra. Your mantra can be short or long and should bring to mind some aspect of the Divine. Some examples of short mantras are God, Allah, Abba (Father), Krishna, AUM and there are many others. Longer mantras include the Buddhist "Namya ho range kyo."

    • 2

Recite your mantra aloud with feeling. This practice focuses your mind, working from the external to the internal levels.

    • 3

Use mala beads, which generally have 108 beads. This engages the physical body. In the beginning mala use can help with concentration. Roll mala beads between middle finger and thumb of right hand.

    • 4

Recite in a relaxed manner. Don't rush as you chant. Take your time.

    • 5

Move into a deeper, silent practice. As you recite your mantra, it will penetrate into your deeper self. Allow that to happen and rest in that space.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your mantra secret

  • Avoid mindless recitation. If this happens, consider changing your mantra

  • Avoid changing mantras too often. Consistency is important.
