1
Schedule an appointment with a local eye doctor. In order to detect night blindness, an ophthalmologist (a medial doctor who specializes in eye disorders) must examine your eyes and provide you with a formal diagnosis.
-
2
Your doctor needs to know the severity of the night blindness, when it started, whether it happened suddenly or gradually, previous eye injuries, vision changes and if you’re experiencing stress or anxiety in your life. In addition, your doctor will inquire about your family medical history, your current health status and the medications you’re currently taking (prescription and over-the-counter).

3
Discuss the eye examination and testing procedures with your doctor. Your doctor must give you a thorough eye examination along with a series of specialized tests, which may include the split-lamp examination, contrast acuity, corneal topography manifest refraction, ophthalmoscopy, pupil reflex test and the visual acuity.
-
4
Complete the required eye examinations and tests. Depending on the number of tests your doctor gives you, your appointment may last 1 ½ to 2 hours. Your doctor can usually provide you with the test results immediately. However, you may have to wait a couple of days to receive the results back on certain eye tests.

5
Receive the test results from your doctor. Your doctor will go over the information and details with you and inform you of treatment options based on the severity of your night blindness.
