Winterizing the pool for the winter is very important and needs to be done correctly. If not done correctly, the inlet valves, skimmer and water could freeze and damage the pool. It is very important that all steps are followed correctly. Some people choose not to cover the pool after winterizing it for the winter, but this just makes it harder to clean and open the pool in the spring.

  • Vacuum hose
  • Net
  • Pool cover

    How to Winterize a Pool

  1. Step 1

Clean the pool. This means using the net to remove all the debris, cleaning liner, emptying the skimmer basket and the filter. Then you must use the pool vacuum hose to clean the bottom of the pool. After cleaning check for leaks, torn liners and cracks.

  2. Step 2

Use a chemical winterizing kit that is recommended for the size pool that is being winterized. Add the chemicals according to the directions on the package.

  3. Step 3

Flush and drain the filter. The filter valve should be turned to the waste setting and back flushed until the water level drops just below the skimmer.

  4. Step 4

Block all inlet valves with the screw on plastic tabs that come with the pool. Place a piece of Styrofoam in the skimmer. This will help prevent ice damage if the skimmer would clog.

  5. Step 5

Disconnect any electrical lines that will not be covered during inclement weather conditions. If not disconnecting the filter and pump for the winter, it must be covered and secured to protect it from water.

  6. Step 6

Inflate inner tubes or big pillows to place in the pool water. Then place a pool cover on the pool and secure.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to use the right winterizing kit for the size pool that is being winterized.
  • Some people use antifreeze in the inlet lines to prevent freezing.
  • Always make sure to drain enough water out of the pool before closing it up for the winter.
