Step 1
Make the consequences of underage drinking clear. Explain that being grounded is the least of a long list of dangers associated with underage drinking. Create a zero tolerance policy in regards to underage drinking for your household. Discuss news stories related to underage drinking with your children.
-
Step 2
Treat alcohol like guns. Alcohol should be stored in locked cabinets when not being used or monitored by adults. You can also mark the level of alcohol left in each bottle after usage to prevent further drinking.
-
Step 3
Ensure adequate adult supervision. Teenage parties and events should always be supervised by responsible adults.
-
Step 4
Monitor your child's behavior and friends. Sometimes hanging with the "wrong" crowd can cost a life. Notice your child's behavior for signs of intoxication which include slurred speech and stumbling.
-
Step 5
Watch your own drinking habits. Children often imitate adult behavior even when they have been told to do the opposite. Seeing mom or dad passed out on the couch is often a bigger influence than simply forbidding an action.
-
Step 6
Keep your child occupied. Boredom sometimes leads to underage drinking. Activities like sports or crafts, can allow your child to have a positive outlet.
